Septage is fed into a screw auger inside the screen. Sludges exit the screen through the perforations. The screenings form a "plug" at the discharge end of the screw, which is held in place by retention cone using pneumatic air pressure. As screenings build up, they press the retention cone backward, releasing the dry screenings into the screenings chute.
