Water systems have traditionally been limited to two options for cleaning or inspecting a reservoir or storage tank; empty the tank or send in divers. Both choices are costly, labour intensive and raise confined space safety issues. Using brushes and a powerful submersible pump, VR Systems underwater cleaning units remove sediment and can discharge the waste to an approved location, such as a sanitary sewer, a lagoon or truck. Equipped with lights and video cameras, the vehicles are controlled with a joystick while referencing monitors with real time video.

The entire cleaning or inspection process is documented on videotape. In addition, the system can pinpoint the precise position of any leaks and other structural problems.
